Optimal Frequency for Cleaning French Drains

Regardless of how well a French Drain is installed, there are certain aspects of preventative maintenance that should be performed on a regular basis to maintain their functionality.  French Drains are designed to keep water away from your home, and help prevent soil erosion which can wreak havoc on your home’s foundation.

French drains in Milton can get clogged by water runoff that contains dirt, debris, and silt.  You may also see buildup of lawn clippings, smaller leaves, and pebbles if they are close-by.  If you want the French Drain that is near your home to run for as long as possible, we recommend cleaning it at least once a year.  But there is a proper way to do it.

French Drains Need Maintenance Annually

French Drains should be annually maintained, and the best way to do this is with an electric snake.  Usually there will be a cover that needs to be removed, or if part of your French Drain is connected directly to a downspout, then the downspout should be disconnected in order to provide easy access to the drain.

Snaking out the drain allows you to break up any obstructions or soft clogs that have accumulated in the drain over the last year.  Doing this directly before the rainy season will ensure that it lasts for a year.

Tree roots may also obstruct the lines in a French Drain, so an ordinary snake isn’t usually enough to get the job done right the first time.  Instead, ensure that you are able to use an electric snake.

Taking Care of French Drains

If you have the knowledge and experience to operate an electric snake, and own one, French Drains can be a great weekend DIY project.  However, if you don’t have the appropriate tools, or perhaps you would just prefer not to muck around in the dirt around your French Drains then Milton Landscaping Turfpros can definitely help.  As a matter of fact, this type of yearly maintenance is easy to forget, so having a professional on hand to remind you of these necessary steps is often a handy thing to have.

French Drains are a great way to redirect rain and water runoff away from your foundation, septic system, and outdoor features, but they do require some maintenance to ensure that they are in top form.  If you have French Drains on your property or think you may need them on your property, we would be happy to help you either install or keep them clear and working properly.
